ABOUT THE ARTIST
Meredith Bobb is a contemporary artist from the Philadelphia area, currently residing in Idaho Falls. Recently her work has been included into national juried shows at the Masur Museum in Louisiana and at The International Biennial Acrylic Show in Wisconsin. In 2023, Bobb had solo shows for her series “Within Tensions” at The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and The Willard Art Center for The Idaho Falls Arts Council. Her work has been exhibited in various parts of Philadelphia, Albuquerque, and Idaho Falls. Bobb has a Bachelors of Fine Art with a concentration in drawing from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania.
It was during the pandemic that Bobb found new inspiration and started working in high flow acrylic paints and markers. After two decades of developing her unique bone-inspired imagery, these new mediums has opened many new possibilities for her. Her current work combines the use of bold colors, abstracted faces and flowing environments of energy that create curiosity in the viewer. Being influenced by her subconscious allows the artwork to go in directions the artist could not have anticipated. The unpredictable nature of developing each painting keeps the entire process exciting throughout.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Being at this age has me looking both forwards and backwards. Every day more technology is introduced into our lives and this can feel overwhelming at times. I feel it is important that we learn how to balance using technology as a tool, but still remember the importance of what we have without it. How do we connect to others in our lives? Technological advances causes isolation, but we are still part of a collective of people experiencing this time in history. The imagery I create serves as a representation of the bonds between us, the relationships we have with others and ourselves. In my painting process, I purposefully do not know where each piece will lead me. The process is organic and by rotating the canvas and layering colors, new visual opportunities are made. This is something that AI cannot learn. I purposefully leave echoes of previous layers to show progression. The creative process is a human process, which we need more of at this time. We, as a collective, go through many challenges that others never know about. My goal is to connect with the viewer on an emotional and thoughtful level in the quiet space where we sit with ourselves.
There is an ongoing transformation of imagery when developing a painting and the final piece often varies greatly from where it initially began. I start a painting in two different ways. Initially I will draw abstracted forms with a paint marker or begin by adding thin flowing washes of acrylic paint. From this stage I incrementally add layers to organically discover unique faces and shapes. These fluid layers of color help to create environments of energy and movement. This dynamic process requires constant negotiation and keeps me engaged with each painting. I find that I am drawn to include faces in my work as it creates a visual story for interpretation. My imagery walks the line between what is recognizable and what is surreal and abstracted. Pursuing this type of artwork is a meditative exercise through my subconscious. It allows me to process the complex feelings I have being at this stage of my life and continues to ground me.
