ABOUT THE ARTIST

Meredith Bobb is a contemporary artist from the Philadelphia area currently residing in Idaho Falls. In 2023, Bobb had solo shows for her series “Within Tensions” at The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and The Willard Art Center for The Idaho Falls Arts Council. Her work has been exhibited in various parts of Philadelphia, Albuquerque, and Idaho Falls. Bobb has a Bachelors of Fine Art with a concentration in drawing from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania.

Currently Bobb uses a combination of acrylic paints, inks and markers to develop bold images that create curiosity and connect with the viewer. This work presents the continued evolution of using abstracted bone forms and figures which have been developing throughout her work the last twenty years. The line forms have evolved through various stages and mediums which directly correlates with the changes in her life. The process of creating art has served to be a constant and reliable outlet for the artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The current body of work reflects a state of contemplation and weight of the unknown future. Many of the forms are “stretched” by the strain of choices, each decision propelling the figure into a new undetermined timeline. In my life, the ramifications of my decisions affect not only my children, but also my parents. The unknown future of my family is a constant worry and heavy on my mind. There is no exact right or wrong choice, however, time continues forward.

Throughout my work I use interconnected people depicted as unique bone forms and other shapes. These figures are intensionally drawn without having specific characteristics like ethnicity or gender. The use of stretched webbing illustrates the constant push and pull between and within the figures. There is a balance between experimenting while also creating recognizable figures and faces that are relatable to the viewer. I want the viewer to pause and react with curiosity or emotion to imagery they are not familiar with.

My paintings start with a beginning point in mind, a basic idea sketched out. I work in partnership with the acrylic paint, negotiating as I go, to develop each painting. Fluid, bold curved lines appeal to me to build intensity. At times I treat my acrylic paint like watercolors to develop layers of depth or webbed tension between the figures. This energy is amplified by the figure being placed in an unknown environment, often one of movement. The dynamic results of each painting is a unique image, not one I could fully have imagined beforehand.
