ABOUT THE ARTIST

Meredith Bobb is a figurative expressionist artist from the Philadelphia area currently residing in Idaho Falls. In 2023, Bobb had solo shows for her series “Within Tensions” at The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and The Willard Art Center for The Idaho Falls Arts Council. Her work has been exhibited in various parts of Philadelphia, Albuquerque, and Idaho Falls. Bobb has a Bachelors of Fine Art with a concentration in drawing from Kutztown University, Pennsylvania.

Currently Bobb uses a combination of acrylic paints, inks and markers to develop bold images that create curiosity and connect with the viewer. This work presents the continued evolution of using abstracted bone forms and figures which have been developing throughout her work the last twenty years. The line forms have evolved through various stages and mediums which directly correlates with the changes in her life. The process of creating art has served to be a constant and reliable outlet for the artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Life is unpredictable and we all do our best to navigate its challenges. The current body of work focuses on processing internal conflict and thoughts as well as the tensions and connections experienced with others. Some pieces display a more intense depiction, while others are a calm acknowledgement of the constant unknown of the future. In the last few years there has been the need for negotiation for balance in my life being the generation in between – having twins while also attending to my parents’ needs. Painting and drawing is a way for me to work through my life experiences and get through each day. I need to do the work; it’s the one place I have total control and freedom in my life.

Throughout my work I use interconnected people depicted as unique bone forms and other shapes. These figures are intensionally drawn without having specific characteristics like ethnicity or gender. The use of stretched webbing illustrates the constant push and pull between and within the figures. There is a balance between experimenting while also creating recognizable figures and faces that are relatable to the viewer. I want the viewer to pause and react with curiosity or emotion to imagery they are not familiar with.

My paintings start with a beginning point in mind, a basic idea sketched out. I work in partnership with the acrylic paint, negotiating as I go, to develop each painting. Fluid, bold curved lines and colors like Prussian Blue, Alizarin Crimson and Quinacridone Gold appeal to me to build intensity. At times I treat my acrylic paint like watercolors to develop layers of depth or webbed tension between the figures. The dynamic results of each painting is a unique image, not one I could fully have imagined beforehand.
